Embarking on an Odyssey: Phase I
Embark on a journey through the transformative phases of Odyssey Academy, a project that unfolds in two stages. In the inaugural phase, an existing YMCA structure undergoes a complete renovation into a charter school, poised to extend its reach along the serene Gulf Coast.
​In this pivotal phase, I stepped into the role of project manager, guiding the Odyssey team through every turn of the design journey. From the inception of the project to working with the General Contractor during construction, I guided the design team with clear vision and determination, bringing together creativity and expertise.
​My multifaceted role encompassed not only the strategic oversight of the project but also hands-on involvement. Navigating through schematic design intricacies, spearheading development, refining construction documents, and leading the permitting process were all part of the process.
A paramount challenge emerged as we transitioned the facility from its recreational roots to an educational haven, necessitating innovative solutions to address life safety imperatives and allowable area constraints. My pivotal involvement in this endeavor honed my expertise in navigating complex building classifications as permitted by the city.
​Moreover, the project demanded meticulous attention to detail, including the meticulous documentation of as-builts and meticulous adherence to airport sound attenuation protocols, owing to its adjacency to Ellington Airport. This facet of the project journey acquainted me with the nuances of STC ratings and fostered seamless collaboration with consultants to ensure regulatory compliance and structural integrity.

The Odyssey Continues: Phase II
In order to minimize construction time, Phase Two of Odyssey Academy was issued separately. As demolition for Phase One began, we were given additional time to finalize the new PEMB classroom addition adjacent to the existing building. This phase had a smaller scope than Phase One, but it provided valuable insights into PEMB construction. We were able to fit a total of 10 classrooms, each with its own restroom, for Pre-K through Kindergarten students. Currently, we are in the process of finalizing the construction documents for this phase with city permitting.
